History
In February, 1981, Brazil and the world were introduced to the Volkswagen Trucks brand, which has been making history and leading the market with trucks and busses that are a perfect fit for its clients. Today, with over 40 years of success, the brand is part of the TRATON Group, one of the largest manufacturers of commercial vehicles in the world, a company that wants to reinvent transportation through its products and services, and as a partner to its clients.
VWCO offers a full line of trucks and busses. Its cargo transportation solutions include trucks that range from 3.5 to 125 metric tons in gross weight, divided in three product families – VW Delivery, Constellation, and Meteor. The manufacturer has also developed a complete line of products for passenger transportation, based on the Volksbus chassis, to serve the markets for rural, urban, freight, road, and school busses.
Factory
Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus (VWCO) has two factories operating under a revolutionary production concept that has been a decisive factor in its success.
The main plant, located in Resende, a mere 150 km from the city of Rio de Janeiro, made automotive industry history when it introduced a modern concept for managing the relationship between manufacturer and principal suppliers, dubbed "Modular Consortium". In this production system, responsibility for assembling the vehicles is shared by the company and the suppliers. The main benefits are increased productivity, enhanced quality, and lower costs. The partner companies are Maxxion (chassis and wheels), Meritor (axles), Syspensys (pneumatic suspensions), Carese (paint job), Aethra (cab frame), Powertrain (engine), Kroschu (cab finishing), and Moura (batteries).
Modular Consortium
The Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus factory in Resende developed a project that is innovative in terms of both technology and respect for employees and the environment: the Modular Consortium represents a breakthrough in manufacturing management, and has proven its success over the years.
Responsibility for product quality assurance lies squarely with VWCO but, by partnering with key suppliers, the Modular Consortium effectively reduces production costs, investments, inventory manufacturing time and, especially, allows for increased agility in producing vehicles with true added value. The partner companies are Maxxion (chassis and wheels), Meritor (axles), Syspensys (pneumatic suspensions), Carese (paint job), Aethra (cab frame), Powertrain (engine), Kroschu (cab finishing), and Moura (batteries). At the factory, these partners share the installations and infrastructure with VWCO.
By sharing production with its partners, the company is able to better focus on other aspects of the business, such as logistics, marketing strategies, client relations and, especially, new product development.
